These spiny softshell turtle hatchlings are among the lucky ones whose mother was able to find a place to lay her eggs. Restaurateurs have been fined for putting them on the menu, but experts say shrinking sites for proper nesting are also a big cause of the freshwater turtle’s dwindling population.
