Paco’s weekend antics: 1.Bug Mom while she’s feeding weird little lizards by trying to eat what she calls “gecko bowls” but are actually clever fake noms. Not food 🙁 2.Keep insisting plastic caps are food until Mom brings real treats. Climb into moms lap for the whole bowl, bc I want the whole bowl not just a few pieces. 3.Take a mini nap sort of in the bedside nook… 4.Try to conquer Moms boot, get stuck, whistle through my nose till Mom helps.

What is pyramiding ?

fightingforanimals:

Basically most people think tortoises are supposed to have bumpy shells. Heck no, wild tortoises don’t, and good caretaker’s tortoises don’t. They have a nice smooth shell. The bumps you see on virtually every single captive tortoise is the result of poor husbandry, poor diet, and poor environmental conditions.

This is a healthy sulcata (the kind of tortoise that was in that photo).

Pyramiding will only get worse if their care isn’t maintained correctly asap… like this…

Great visual. Check out the difference. Proper uvb lighting is vital and still no where near as strong as real sunlight.

Once pyramiding occurs, proper care is needed to stop the poor growth and growing heath issues. Time under that care can help, but it will not reverse the already deformed shell growth.

thewhimsyturtle  replied to your photo “Someone is getting some big ideas in that terrarium of hers… …”

Kirby wants to include an Article for freedom from baths. He is putting on his super-turtle cape and going to dump his bath water in the sink! If he can push it over…(Caped Kirby pics definitely coming this week once humom has time to take pics!)

YES! Zoya agrees “He [human] has plundered our excess noms, ravaged our hiding spots, disrupted our pursuit of quality basking and snuggly naps, all  in the name of the vile bath!”

Kirby should totally publish The Kirby Papers!

How many dandies would Zoya like in exchange for never showing this to Waffles and Mango?

Um. Zoya says she’ll take a dozen dandies and not to read that card we sent too closely… if you notice something strange its NOT a secret tortie code…

(Psst Waffles, Mango, keep practicing your shell-igraphy signature!)

@findiviglio continues his discussion of the Best Pet Tortoises, with a discussion of and introductory care sheet for the Greek Tortoise.

The Best Pet Tortoise: Golden Greek or Greek Tortoise:

Hello, Frank Indiviglio here.  I do not believe that any tortoise species can be classified as “easy-to-keep”, but several are better-suited as pets than others.  I’ve covered on of these, the Russian Tortoise (Testudo horsfieldi), in an earlier article (read article here).  The Greek Tortoise (T. graeca), while interesting enough for the most seasoned hobbyist, may also be the best pet tortoise, and an ideal choice for first-time keepers.  Topping out at 8 inches in length, captive-bred individuals are readily available.  They are as personable as any of their relatives, and decades of popularity among European keepers has left us with a good understanding of their needs. I’ll summarize these in the following article, and will also draw from my own experiences with this and related species during my long career at the Bronx Zoo.
