Mojave Maxine, the desert tortoise at The Living Desert, emerged from brumation (reptilian hibernation) at 12:06pm on Tuesday, February 7th 2017. Spring is here!

Every year, The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens holds a contest predicting when Mojave Maxine, the sanctuary’s resident desert tortoise, will emerge from burmation. In case you missed it, Mojave Maxine emerged from her burrow on Feb. 7th this year.  Maxine’s popularity has made her the west coast version of Punxsutawney Phill (the cuter version too… but we’re biased).  This month, the folks at the living desert will also be celebrating Maxine’s 40th birthday!

Zoya and I have been pretty skeptical of all these ‘early spring’ claims, since its been snowing on and off since well.. yesterday! But today its finally warm and sunny, and the snow is melting away. So now we’re finally ready to say, SPRING IS HERE! Welcome back Maxine and happy early birthday! you don’t look a day over 25 😀
