Took Stotle and Atlas outside since it was somewhat warm out- Atlas was moving around and seems to be making some great progress!!! Also- Stotle doesn’t seem to bully him, which is good xD

I’d been so worried about Stotle because of this cold, I had a heating pad but it started to warp so i got rid of it, now all i have is a heating light (which i now know is bad to have on at night because it can exaust him!) So I have the space heater propped up on the outside of his home, so the warm air can get in there. is this okay? it’s a lot less cold in his tank, but it’s not hot in there or anything. just keeps it an average temp at night instead of 40 degrees.

Hey!  Long day and not at my best right now, but couldn’t go to bed without sending you a message of some sort. What kinda turtle/tortoise is Stotle ( I think I should know but my brain is failing. SO sorry! ) ??

The space heaters come with the general risk of leaving them on at night. You’re not supposed to because its a fire hazard. That said I’ve been having the same issue.  When temps here are in the teens and single digits. I have added a heater myself for night temps and keep the warm mist humidifier running.  Keep in mind that these dry everything out really quickly. It means more soaks for tortoises (Sorry Zoya but bath time is better than dehydration!) & generally means keep a keen eye on your shell baby and make sure the daytime temps meet the requirements as does the amount of UVB they receive during the day.  Not that you shouldn’t do this always, but extra detailed care is needed when you can’t be sure of the environment on an hour to hour basis.

Its no joke that having a space heater going through the night is dangerous. I don’t sleep well when I do this. I had a friend in undergrad whose house (apt that was a floor of the house but the whole thing) burned down a month before graduation.  I don’t mean to make anyone paranoid but being extra safe while doing what hs to be done is really a hard balance. That whole experience made me (a floridian gone north not even understanding what a gas stove means…so already confused) extra careful and aware of heating and electrical issues in older homes.  That is the sorta thing that only you can decide whats ok or not. I have lived in New England for over 10 years now but winter still leaves me feeling like a Floridian that doesn’t know what she’s doing.

I hope this makes some sort of sense (cause I’m pretty exhausted).  Send more info about Stotle, and I’ll send more specifics. Your concern alone says you are paying attention, and that’s a good sign IMHO. Species specific info is important when it comes to husbandry and winter care, however, so let us know and we’ll get ya all the info we can ASAP.

Hang in there and stay warm! Both of you! 😀
