saved her from getting run over.
I have no idea why she is painted bright blue.

So glad you saved her! Poor thing is probably struggling with his/her shell painted like that.

Don’t paint turtle or tortoise shells folks. Its so bad for them.

What looked like a huge rock in the middle of the railroad track was found to be something else, indeed.

After bringing the locomotive to a jolting stop near Campo, Pacific Southwest Railway Museum volunteer crew members disembarked to remove the mini-boulder. That’s when they got a big surprise.

It was a gigantic tortoise, about 24 inches long and maybe 100 pounds. It took two robust crew members to lift the giant reptile and carry it off the track and out of harm’s way, much to the delight of passengers.

Engineer Dick Pennick reported his close encounter to the S. D. Turtle and Tortoise Society, which identified the wayward reptile as most likely an African sulcata tortoise. A nonnative species, it probably had escaped from its owner’s yard. Pennick says they’re on the lookout for the tortoise, now nicknamed “Hobo.”

He confirms that no hare was in sight.
