Flat-tailed Tortoise (Pyxis planicauda)

The
Flat-tailed Tortoise (Pyxis planicauda) is just one of the beautiful,
endemic tortoises of Madagascar facing extinction. In addition to
rampant poaching for the pet trade, this species has lost more than 70%
of its habitat in just three generations, leading to a population
decline of at least 60%.

doubleplusunlucky:

I finally got the opportunity to see a wild desert tortoise while hiking last week. It rained a bit in the morning before I set out, so a bunch of animals ventured out to forage while the weather was nice and water was available. She was right in the middle of the trail munching on cholla buds and didn’t think much of the bald primate that insisted on taking her photo.
