UM

MY FRIEND FOUND A TORTOISE IN A BOX ON CAMPUS

WE BROUGHT IT INTO OUR ASTRONOMY CLASS BECAUSE WE DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH IT.

HELP?

Hey! You should definitely put out some flyers/emails to see if its anyones shell.. but that sounds like abandonment and not sure that human needs ownership of that shell back. Where are you located? Unless you’re really ready to do all the research on the type of tortoise, and create a proper enclosure for him or her, you’ll probably want to contact a rescue in your area that might be able to find a good home for him/her.

We figured it had been abandoned cause it was in a box. It was pretty big (I’d say maybe six or seven inches long) and it was one of those turtles with the red on the sides of their heads (Red eared Slider?). We kept it with us for the rest of class, though we were careful to not touch it too much and wash our hands when we did because we’d heard you can get salmonella from turtles/tortoises. The guy who found it told us he would take it to a pet store as soon as he could. I don’t think there are any turtle or tortoise rescues locally, so that was the best he could do. I’m not sure what happened after that. Thanks for the information though!

No problem! You guys are great for not leaving it there and being careful and all that. If the guy that found it hasn’t taken it to a pet store yet, depending on where you are, there’s a pretty big network of turtle and tortoise people that help get these guys to a place they can be cared for properly. In any case,  I’m sure that turtle (does sound like a red eared slider) is grateful you all found and kept an eye on him/her. Glad to know there are ppl like you guys out there doing what they can. 😀

Hey followers? Please take a moment and vote for Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre (KTTC) in Shell’s FuellingChange contest. They do their best to help Canada’s turtles, and $100,000 can save a lot of shelled lives. They’re very close to the number 1 spot, so why not give them a hand?

And reblog, ‘cause every person this reaches counts.
