When Janice Rich got the call from the police on Monday, she was nervous. Her beloved pet tortoise Diesel had been abducted from her La Verne backyard and missing for weeks.

Miraculously, the 130-pound tortoise worth over $1,000 was found this week, 20 miles away in Whittier.

“I didn’t want to get my hopes up in case it was another tortoise,” she said. “But when I saw him, I fell to the floor and just started hugging and kissing him.”

Despite minor injuries, “Diesel” is “happy and eating,” Rich said.

The pet nappers broke into the Rich’s wooden gate around 8 p.m. Oct. 7, snatching Diesel, the family’s desert tortoise.

Rich took to social media to help bring her beloved pet home.

“The message must have reached the right people,” Rich said.

The final tip in this unusual caper came from a woman who called the La Verne Police Department to report that, while driving her car in a remote area of Whittier, she narrowly missed hitting a giant tortoise in the middle of the road, according to Detective Shawn Dinkel, of the La Verne Police Department.

Thanks to Rich’s social media campaign, the woman recognized the tortoise as Diesel, Dinkel said.

Rich claimed that the theft was well planned.

“There were no signs of struggle – no blood,” Rich said.

This case is not the only one. Dinkel said that there have been other similar cases.

He recommends installing security cameras.

There have been no arrests, but police are convinced that there was more than one thief. If caught, they face burglary and grand theft charges, Dinkel said.

“It must have taken two men to steal Diesel because he’s so big,” Rich said.

I cannot express how much I love turtles. I don’t know why I love them so much, but they’re just so beautiful and underrated. I loved this big guy, he was so sweet and gentle.

We feel ya. I mean, look at that face?

Zoya got tired of climbing up and over her hide, so she decided to try something new. I’m not sure if she was going for DIY hamster ball or trying to do a cartwheel.

Good news! Phoebe has no parasites! 😀 She is fit as a fiddle and has a date with a vet (wit woo!) He’s never met an adult hingie before so she’s off to meet him 🙂

Congrats Phoebe!!  you’re looking good and confident and like you’re loving that sunshine. I hope your date went well, I can’t imagine anyone wouldn’t be excited to meet an adult hingie like you. I know I would!

Is there a tortoise community on tumblr sort of like the betta community, where I could find helpful guides from experienced tortoise parents? I find such conflicting and often very obviously incorrect info on some “professional” sites (I check their betta pages first, if they list bowls as okay then I can’t believe anything else they say), and I know there are a lot of people on here who are very dedicated to doing right by their pets.

I’d say yes, there is a good group of tortoise owners/ folks that work with them (and turltes as well) that share their experiences here on tumblr and also answer questions. We here at Tort-time  (Zoya pants the russian tortoise and I ) try our best to post good info and answer questions, as well as share cute pictures and silly stuff. Here are a few great tortoise owners/informative tumblrs off the top of my head wafflesworld thewhimsyturtle tortoise-adventures  turtleconservancy tortoiseblog to name a few. Not on tumblr but Tortaddiction is a great blog.

It is tough with all the crappy information out there.. but I think theres a great group of tortoise owners (and turtle owners) who are dedicated to their shell friends and learning and making sure they get the best care possible.

My Hermann’s tortoise Corban Dallas and his tort box.

Thanks for the submission sparkletangerine !!  Check it out, another fine example of a tortoise enclosure with Corbin (a fine looking Hermanns tort) basking gloriously in it! Sweet pad Corbin! We gotta know.. have you ever tried to climb outta there??
