Stumbled across this beaautiful Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina) today! For those who don’t know they are called box turtles because their shell is hinged. Making them able to fully enclose, or “box” themselves in their shell. They are a terrestrial species meaning that they spend their life on land.

They’re a species of special concern here in Massachusetts. If your state (which may be Massachusetts, idk) also has them as a listed species you might want to contact your state’s department of fish and wildlife, they’re usually interested in finding out where listed species live!
