If shell-bearing reptiles strike your fancy, the San Diego Turtle and Tortoise Society (SDTTS) has just the event for you.
On Saturday and Sunday, July 27 and 28, the SDTTS will host its annual Balboa Park Turtle and Tortoise Show & Plant Sale at Casa del Prado. Admission is free. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The program includes an exhibit of rare and endangered turtle and tortoise species, on-site adoptions and the sale of plants and other gift items. Proceeds will directly benefit the turtles and tortoises.
The society has been rescuing chelonian reptiles in San Diego County since 1971. The nonprofit organization takes in more than 600 animals per year. It accepts animals sent to them by veterinarians, Humane Societies, owners who wish to surrender them, and people who find them as strays. It is illegal to remove native tortoises from the desert but also illegal to return them to it, so the SDTTS provides a much-needed service in accommodating abandoned, domesticated animals.
The society not only provides medical treatment, animal rehabilitation, and adoption services, but also coordinates community outreach and education programs.
